We are hi-ce--the Center for Highly Interactive Classrooms, Curricula & Computing in Education--a group of science educators, computer scientists, psychologists, scientists, and literacy and learning specialists located in the School of Education at the University of Michigan.

We are dedicated to educational reform through inquiry-based curricula, learner-centered technologies, comprehensive professional development, and administrative and organizational models.

Design and Technology Academy

From July 20 - 31, hi-ce's nano group in collaboration with Ypsilanti Public Schools and the IDEA Institute is hosting the Design and Technology Academy for 6th - 8th graders. Throughout the Academy, the ~40 participating students will be challenged with a series of design problems, tied to contemporary issues in energy and sustainability. Engineers working in e.g. microengineering will give the students a first hand experience on how the design processes work in cutting-edge science and technology.    

 

IQWST hosting PD workshops for Middle School Teachers

In the days of July 8 - July 22, IQWST will be hosting PD workshops for about 50 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science teachers from Michigan, Illinois, Florida, and Texas. Content matter in Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science as well as challenging teaching practices, like facilitating whole-class discussions, will be addressed throughout the workshops.

May 29, at 9:00 a.m. in Brownlee Room, Cory is defending his dissertation Preservice Elementary Teachers’ Development of Pedagogical Design Capacity for Inquiry:  An Activity – Theoretical Perspective.


hi-ce Staff and Students on the Move!

We wish our hi-ce colleagues well in their new ventures. Gerry Rau has left hi-ce during the summer - Gerry, best of luck for the future! On August 7, Hsien-Ta Lin defended his dissertation work successfully - counterattractions! Hsien-Ta will return to Taiwan this fall - we are sure you will do a great job there! Mandy Chambers is leaving her position as project manager of IQWST on August 22. Mandy will continue to be around School of Education, pursuing her doctoral degree here - good luck and please stop by, Mandy! Dr. BaoHui Zhang (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) has returned to Singapore after spending six weeks at hi-ce as visiting scholar.


Welcome to Visitors and New hice Staff and Students!

Terri Ridenour is the new project data manager for The Impact of Online Professional Development (IOPD) run by Barry Fishman. Terri comes to hi-ce from Mathematics Teaching and Learning to Teach Projects here at SOE, where she worked as a Project Administrator. Dr. Sanghyun Jang and Dr. BoKyung Kye from KERIS (Korea Education & Research Information Service) are working in the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) project as visiting scholars this school year. Dr. Yael Bamberger from Department of Education in Technology and Science, Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) and Dr. Shanna Daly from Purdue University are both new post doctoral fellows working with the Nanogroup. Dr. Andrew Falk is a new post doctoral fellow working on the IQWST project. New graduate students are Kasey McCall (UDL), Bridget Q. Maldonado (IQWST), James Hagerty (MoDeLS), Sarah Clowes (MoDeLS), and R. Joseph Waddington (LP). Yi-Ling Hsiao (IOPD) , Huma Alam (IOPD) , PreScillia Fleming (IOPD), and Paul Krajick (IQWST and IOPD) have all joined hi-ce as temporary staff.
